Amid ongoing attacks on DEI, Iām incredibly grateful to see the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) reaffirm its commitment to gender equity in academic medicine. Their latest position paper published just this week provides an exceptionally informative summary of the evidence and strategies needed to address persistent inequities.
Despite making up a substantial portion of the workforce, women physicians remain underrepresented in senior roles:
š¹ 38% of full-time medical school faculty are women, but only 21% reach full professor, 15% become department chairs, and 16% are deans.
š¹ Women face systemic barriers including implicit bias, lack of mentorship and sponsorship, and institutional cultures that favor male physicians.
How do we fix this?
ā Invest in mentorship & sponsorship to support womenās advancement.
ā Establish leadership development programs tailored to equip women physicians with the skills to advance into senior positions.
ā Implement bias training to mitigate inequities in hiring & promotions.
ā Create transparent promotion criteria.
ā Hold institutions accountable for gender diversity in leadership.
ā Recognize and reward the unpaid labor women physicians contribute to advocacy and community-centered work. #TheNoClub

Thank you to AMWA for this vital work and for setting a powerful example. I hope it will inspire other organizations to strengthen and renew their commitment to gender equity in academic medicine during these critical times.
